What Are Roller Shades?

Roller shades are made from a single piece of fabric that rolls up neatly around a tube at the top of the window. Their minimal design gives your space a crisp, modern finish while offering flexible privacy and light control—from bright and airy to dark and cozy.

You can use Roller Shades on their own or pair them with other window treatments (like drapes or sheers) for a layered, designer feel.

Choose the Right Light Control for Every Room

One of the biggest decisions is how much light you want when the shade is down. At House Of Blinds, you can choose from several levels:

1) Light Filtering

Light-filtering fabrics soften and diffuse daylight, creating a warm glow while reducing glare. This is a great option for living rooms, dining rooms, and kitchens where you want brightness with a comfortable feel.

2) Room Darkening

Room-darkening fabrics sit between light filtering and blackout. They reduce a large amount of outside light while still allowing a little brightness in—ideal when you want more privacy and a calmer room.

3) Blackout

Blackout roller shades are simple, effective, and economical—often all you need. They block most (and in many cases nearly all) incoming light, making them a top choice for bedrooms, nurseries/kids’ rooms, and media/home theatre spaces. Blackout options are also excellent for privacy.

Our Roller Shade Models

House Of Blinds offers multiple roller shade styles so you can get the exact performance you want:

Solar Shades

Solar shades use a micro-perforated / open-weave screen fabric that reduces glare and heat while helping maintain your view outside. They’re available in popular openness factors like 1%, 3%, 5%, and 10%:

  • Lower openness (1%) = more glare/UV reduction + more daytime privacy

  • Higher openness (10%) = more visibility to outside

Solar shades are popular in offices, sunrooms, waiting rooms, shops, and patio doors. They also help protect furniture and décor from sun fading and can contribute to energy efficiency—helping keep heat out in summer and in during winter.

Natural Light Filtering Decorative Roller Shades

These fabrics are translucent and design-forward, diffusing light evenly while providing strong daytime privacy. They typically don’t preserve the outside view, but they do create a bright, comfortable atmosphere with modern textures, patterns, and finishes.

Blackout Roller Shades

A modern classic for total comfort—designed for maximum darkness and privacy. Many blackout constructions use multiple layers for stronger light control, and premium mechanisms can be quiet and smooth to operate.

Lift Systems & Operation Options

Choose the control style that fits your space, your safety needs, and your daily routine:

Cordless Lift

A clean, modern look with no dangling cords—excellent for child and pet safety, and easy to use with a simple push/pull motion.

Motorized Roller Shades

Raise and lower your shades with a button, remote, or smartphone—perfect for large windows, hard-to-reach areas, or anyone who wants modern automation. Motorization can be:

  • Battery

  • Solar

  • Wired

Many motorized systems can be pre-programmed and adjusted to your preferences, and some offer app/bluetooth control within typical in-home range.

Continuous Cord Loop with Chain Guard

Ideal for large or extra-tall windows. For improved child safety, Chain Guard is a transparent protective cover designed to comply with Canadian safety expectations. In the neutral position, it keeps less than 22 cm of chain exposed at the top. To operate, you lift the guard and use the exposed chain at the bottom like a regular continuous loop.

Spring-Loaded System (Where Applicable)

A traditional option that allows the shade to be pulled down and locked in place. If a spring shade doesn’t hold its position, it may need tension adjustment.

Measurement, Installation & Care

Inside Mount vs Outside Mount
  • Inside mount sits inside the window frame for a sleek, flush look.

  • Outside mount covers a larger area and can improve light control and privacy.

How to Measure

Inside mount:

  • Measure width at top/middle/bottom; use the narrowest number.

  • Measure height left/center/right; use the longest number.

Outside mount:

  • Measure the area you want to cover and add extra width/height (often up to 4″ more for better coverage).

Installation

Roller shades are designed to be DIY-friendly, even for beginners. Typically you’ll need a tape measure, level, pencil, and a drill/screwdriver. Hardware and instructions are included, and many brands offer support materials like videos.

No-Drill Installation Headrail (If Selected):
A faster install option—snap the headrail into place and insert the shade. No tools, no holes.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Dust regularly with a feather duster, microfiber cloth, or a vacuum soft-brush attachment. For spots, use a damp cloth with mild soap and water and blot gently (avoid aggressive scrubbing). For deeper cleaning, wipe carefully with a damp sponge and mild detergent.

Privacy: What to Expect Day vs Night

  • Light filtering provides privacy in daylight, but at night people may see shadows/silhouettes depending on interior lighting.

  • Solar shades often give good daytime privacy with outside view, but at night the effect can reverse when indoor lights are on.

  • Blackout provides the strongest privacy and light blocking.

Design Upgrades & Finishing Touches

Want a more premium “built-in” look? Add one of these options:

Fascia, Valance & Cassette

Top covers hide the roll and give a clean finished edge. Options can include:

  • Compact aluminum cassette styles (some with fabric inserts)

  • PVC valance options (reinforced plastic with fabric insert)

  • Larger fascia designs (4″ square aluminum)

In many cases, fabric inserts can match your chosen shade fabric for a more designer finish.

2 or 3 Shades on One Cassette (Up to 144″)

For wide windows or patio doors, you can place 2 or 3 shades on the same cassette, allowing independent control for each section—great for precise brightness control and a striking look.

Designer Collections

For a distinctive style, explore designer-focused fabrics, textures, and patterns—ideal when you want the shade to become part of your décor.

Roller Shades FAQ

What are roller shades?

Roller shades are window coverings made from a single piece of fabric that rolls up and down, offering a clean, modern look with different levels of light control and privacy.

They’re commonly the same product. Many people say “roller blinds,” but “roller shades” is often used for fabric-based custom roller window coverings.

  • Light filtering: diffuses daylight and reduces glare

  • Room darkening: blocks more light than filtering but not total darkness

  • Blackout: blocks most incoming light and provides the strongest privacy

Yes—privacy depends on fabric choice. Sheer/light-filtering gives daytime privacy with some visibility effects; room-darkening and blackout provide greater privacy, with blackout offering the most.

Dual/double roller shades combine two shades in one (for example, light-filtering + blackout, solar + blackout, or zebra + blackout), letting you switch performance based on time of day.

  • Roller shades focus on privacy and light control using light-filtering, room-darkening, or blackout fabrics.

  • Solar shades use screen fabric designed to reduce glare/heat and UV while often preserving an outside view, with openness factors (1% – 14%) affecting visibility and light blocking.

Yes. Roller shades come in many colours, textures, and patterns—from budget-friendly options to premium jacquards, tweeds, vinyl blackout materials, liners, and even plant-based fibres.

Yes. Motorized options allow remote/app control and can be paired with smart systems for schedules/timers and voice control depending on the system.

Yes—cordless and motorized options eliminate dangling cords. Continuous cord loop systems can include a chain guard that limits exposed chain length for improved safety.

Common options include cordless, motorized, continuous cord loop with chain guard, and in some cases spring-loaded systems.

The spring may need more tension. In many designs, pulling the shade down enough to roll the tube several times helps add tension.

Pricing depends on window size, fabric type, and upgrades like motorization, cassettes/valances, liners, or no-drill headrails.

Inside mount gives a built-in look; outside mount covers more area and can improve privacy and light control.

Inside mount: narrowest width + longest height.
Outside mount: measure coverage area and add extra width/height (often up to 4″) for proper coverage.

Yes. They’re designed for straightforward DIY installation with basic tools. No-drill headrail upgrades can make it even faster.

Some custom roller shades ship in 1–3 business days, others in 5–10 business days depending on the product and customization.

Dust regularly; spot clean with mild soap and water by gently blotting. Avoid harsh chemicals and aggressive scrubbing.

Depending on mount type, small side gaps can occur. Some systems offer solutions (gap-blocking strips) to reduce light leakage around the edges.

Lower openness blocks more light and glare and increases daytime privacy; higher openness allows more visibility to the outside.

Often less—when indoor lights are on at night, visibility through solar fabrics can increase.

Yes—this option works well for wide windows and patio doors and allows independent control of each section, up to about 144″ total width.

Options can include compact aluminum cassettes (some with fabric inserts), PVC valances with fabric inserts, and aluminum fascia styles for a more finished look.
